Eyeglasses are a complex accessory. There are those, of course, who wear them out of sheer necessity with no regard to fashion (sad indeed). In the best cases, oft-worn prescription specs can become a base part of a person's aesthetic almost like an added facial feature. Decoratively speaking, I instantly picture model Cole Mohr, who, when he first moved to NYC, always wore black lensless frames with vastly oversized shirts, layered long johns, and patent leather lace-ups. Sadly, two-plus years later, hipster abuse has mired for-adornment-only eyewear in Hot Topic cliche. Until now.

I was instantly charmed by these Kiel Mead glasses with "freckle" specked lenses, from The Future Perfect. The vintage frames are somber, but maintain their sense of humor up close. This pair is cheeky and chic, with a (rare) quiet sense of irony.
Photobucket
As a statement, they stand alone and would be well-paired with a white tee, peg pants and military boots. If you really want to look sharp, however, you'd be well advised to pick up a few F/W 2009 pieces to pair them with. These runway looks from Trovata (below left) and Dries Van Noten (below right) would work it out for me.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
I could also see them with this girlier, layered look from Nanette Lepore (below left) if simpler shoes were involved, or next to this whip-smart color combination from Boy Band of Outsiders (right).
PhotobucketPhotobucket
One last bonus? The glasses do double-duty to filter out the kind of style-deficient boys who "don't make passes" at bespectacled beauties.

DO YOU TRUST US?

The Bloody Beetroots are coming to Boston, and our good friend E-MARCE is hooking it up at Bill's Bar next Tuesday (April 7th). This is rumored to be the very last show at Bill's Bar (thankfully?), so we're pretty certain things are going to get crazy.

Get advanced tickets here:

J-POP is way too underrated, yall.

MINMI - "The Perfect Vision"

I know that I'm hella late on the bloghaus boat, but Shadow Dancer are fucking killing it lately. If Surkin and SebastiAn had an illegitimate lovechild, it would be this. I'm saying this with full confidence after witnessing their fuckawesome show at Metropolis (Montreal) this past weekend.

Normally, I'm not such a huge fan of the stuff Boys Noize Records puts out, but this is too good to pass up. Hints of ghetto-house, glitch, French-touch. Get into it:

Free show! 04-06-09

Check it out; on April 6th, ROGUEWAVES will be spinning at Middlesex Lounge (Cambridge) for our good friends at Illius Rock:

"Welcome back! This is our second go-round and we've got another lovely lineup of Boston's best.

* Pretty and Nice! http://myspace.com/prettyandnice
Fresh from SXSW, this is the last chance to catch them before they leave for tour.
* Sincerely, the Management! http://myspace.com/sincerelythemanagement
* Big Big Bucks! http://myspace.com/thebigbigbucks
* And a special appearance by Kate Radio!

The lovely Lara Callahan will be returning for another amazing photobooth. You'll want to shower.

To RSVP, head to http://illiusrock.com/presents and click "Are you in?" on the right. You'll need to create an account or login. Your RSVP lets you bring guests. All set!"

newest member of ON THAT TIP, yall:

yall.

Here are some of the tracks I've been dropping around Boston.

Que is essentially Slovakia's answer to all of the bullshit electro that has been filtering through der bloghaussphere lately. This has a fucking killer 808 synth drop; I can't get enough of it.

Que - "Let's Go To My Place"

This guy is probably my favorite. Those zany Japs are always up to something. Check out this batshit crazy disco-clash-electro-funtime-dance-party-USA stuff from Ridé. Reverse-vocals, beatmashing, discolines? OK, sure, whatever you say dude.

Don Diablo
looks like a Euro-bro that I could probably chill with - the kind that I can drink a few Heinekens with while we talked about our favorite "barber spa" or something. Despite the fact he takes this hooligan disco thing too seriously, I think he's doing it right. Check it out:

Don Diablo - "Hooligans Never Surrender"

ROGUEWAVES at Harper's Ferry tonight. We'll be spinning alongside our friends Jay K, Sean P, Death Star, and Nato.

Q: Are Justincredible or Zak Broman remotely Irish?

A: No.

PS. I sincerely hope yall can TRUST us next Friday

I hope you can join us, as the runway presentation is set to be very dramatic in Daniel Hernandez' signature style. Come early, see the show, and have a drink with us afterwards. And check out the ONTHATTIP photo preview below, shot by Christopher Huang at one of our fittings. Yes, I am keeping all the clothes a secret until Thursday, so you only get to see a few girls and some poses!

It is with my great honor that I give you the second official ROGUEWAVES remix!

During our last party, we dropped a familiar tune from Zelda: Ocarina of Time which got everybody going. They wanted more and suggested we do something with it; so we placed a synth drop and floating piano line around it, beatmashed the fuck out of it until it didn't sound that great (our signature move), and then here you go.

Definitely not as hard as our former Televandals remix, but the source material wasn't hard to begin with.

Here's hoping you enjoy.
As some of you may or may not know , fear is never a part of the OnThattip.Info dojo. However, on this crisp and clear March morning I found myself afraid. Very very very afraid, and I invite you to share in the official sum of all fears

oh and free E-marce

...that ONTHATTIP.INFO has a new contributor, who will gift us with live show coverage and band interviews; I'm sure she has some other tricks up her sleeve as well. That's the only clue I'll give you for now, with another to come still this week...

Who is our mystery woman?

-TFD, ZB + MG
Before I turn in for the evening (yes, before 11pm...I have a big week coming up!), I want to invite you all to the Privus Lounge 1-Year Anniversary, the launch of Thursday Fashion Night, and a runway show with clothes by Daniel Hernandez, co-styled by myself. Does it get more stylish than that? Oh wait- yes it does. Our own Zak Broman (Roguewaves + ONTHATTIP) and Michael V (the pill) are DJing the press/RSVP reception from 6pm-8:30pm, and on until 10.

I'll be posting some exclusive preview snaps from the fitting in the next couple of days, as shot by Christopher Huang last Sunday.

ON THAT TIP sits down with our good friend Edgard to talk about his exclusive upcoming event this Friday (the 13th!) featuring Bostonian heavy-hitters DJ Knife, BREK.ONE, and The Bladerunners. Edgard continues to carry that underground party torch which you have all come to appreciate lately. This guy is putting 110% into his parties, and it's very easy to see.

So, Edgard. Tell us about yourself.

To start, I want to say that I'm excited to be able to host an event like this one. I'm tired of that old downtown Boston club scene. There is a new and fresh music scene that has emerged in Boston. These kids come out to party, enjoy the music, and have a real good time. I've hosted several events in and around Boston, and I like the more "underground" vibes from these parties. I don't do this to be cool. I do it for the music, the people, to put on a dope party, and to have a good time. I've stayed true to that.

Some of my past events and collaborations have been:
SoundBomb Republik (Goodlife Bar)
Re:Fresh w/ Kid Sister (Z-Square Lounge)

Concepts Pre-Release Party (Z-Square Lounge)

Old School Classic Jamz w/ The Awesome Two (Z-Square Lounge)

Disco-nnection w/ Dj Supreme One & Brenden Wesley (Middlesex)

H U M P 2nd Wednesdays w/ Stretch Armstrong (Goodlife Bar)

The list can go on.

I'm just here to host cool & interesting events, hang out with some chill people who seem to "get it" and have a good time doing it. I'm a simple guy, with simple desires.

What inspired the slasher-flick theme?

I love old school horror films. I've been a fan of the Friday the 13th series since I was a young lad & since the 13th falls on a Friday this month, why not.

What made you choose the line-up?

Ahhh, the line-up. These guys are frigging dope as far as versatility, musical style, keeping the crowd dancing. They're also friends of mine that want to rock the house and put on a dope show. Hip-hop, classics, electro, gutter house - everything. Expect these guys to keep this crowd jumpin'.

What can one expect going to this event?

You can expect a spot that the underground party goers love to go to and have a kick-ass time. The music is being played by some of Bostons dopest DJs.

The drinks are going to be super cheap (none of that $12 glass of fucking vodka). Plus we have flashing lights, sick visuals by Zak Broman, dance, dance, and more DANCE!

This dance party is the first of many. I would love for these parties to be a raging success, and for everyone to have a good experience. I'm even doing giveaways all night as well.

YALL ;

Just want to apologize for the lack of posts up in here - as you may or may not have known, we've all been busy with our pursuits in the name of partying, making $, playing music, and hanging out with all of you kids almost every night.

Please welcome us back as we try to fill you in on what's hot in Boston once again. Nothing will stop us from giving you the premiere underground parties, information, music, and fashion tips that you so very much deserve. We have upcoming gigs this weekend at Vinalia (Back Bay) with Roxy Cottontail. Then we'll see you again at Middlesex Lounge with our good friends at Illius Rock.

Will we see you at Paper and Campus as well? MAYBE, MAYBE . . .

Lots going on tonight, between my boys' crazy house party tonight (scroll down to the previous post), Retro Night, and Giantess at the pill. My other half and I have not been able to get enough of Giantess lately; I'm particularly hooked on Tuff N Stuff, a steady, synth-heavy tune that gets stuck in your head even when you only remember roughly 2 of the words. Which, for us, are "pirate ship". Enjoy this power-packed Friday night, and perhaps one or all of the ONTHATTIP crew will see you tonight, depending on where you end up.

I'm pleased to say that I will be aiding in the production of a runway show on March 19th, showcasing the designs Daniel Hernandez. His fabulous clothes, which range from minimalist tailored pieces to diaphanous couturesque gowns, transcend the work of other successful Boston designers I've seen. It's nice to find true style in this city.

We are casting girls for the March show, this Sunday, March 1st a 3pm, at DH Studios on Clarendon and Newbury! I'd love to see you there if you fit the bill, or generally defy requirements with your level of fierceness...

Saturday night, I had the privilege of attending the new House of Blues opening party on Lansdowne St., which served as the perfect excuse to both purchase and debut the vintage feathered chapeau shown below. The lovely Saffron, who was with me at Poor Little Rich Girl in Davis Square when I bought it, was also sweet enough to document it for me downstairs at Circus later that evening. Photo by Saffron:
Photobucket
It really played up my newish Yves St. Laurent dress from Rescue, and gave me the pluck- HA, GET IT?- to push through such a stimulating (read: exhausting) evening.

At the opening, I also ran into the innately cool Susie G of Click/Clash, who entertained me with witty banter over the (open) bar and also snapped a pic of my hat.

A few odder highlights? Well, there were the multiple people who told me I have "such beautiful hair!" whilst mistaking my beloved topper for some kind of multi-tonal beehive wig. But perhaps the strangest encounter of the night came when a twentysomething woman cut through the crowd and petted my head, exclaiming "it feels like a kitty cat!" She then proceeded to say, while looking her cringing boyfriend right in the eye, that "kitty cats just like being petted the right way" in a sexy voice, before dramatically striding away. I suffer to think what that poor fellow was subjected to at the end of the night...

Stay tuned in the next couple of days for a big post from me on a salon re-opening, my favorite hairstylist Tobey Van O, and some great skin care products/tips.

xo

Yall. There are only two good things that have happened to music this week. One being the fact that Institubes hard-hitter Para One has teamed up with (formerly) Massachusetts' finest San Serac to create Slice & Soda:

"She Knows" - Slice & Soda (TAKEN DOWN , BLAME GOOGLE)
http://www.myspace.com/sliceandsoda

The intro is a nice little soundscape that seems to emanate from Para One's lo-fi, dreamy synth lines as seen in his Naissance des Pieuvres soundtrack. Then it melts into San Serac's dirty bassline discotheque jams. It makes for an interesting listen.

And speaking of that sweeping "dreamscape" bullshit, let's talk about that Danger remix of my personal-favorites-that-you-can't-avoid-on-this-blog Empire of the Sun. They're just so zany!

Empire of the Sun - Walking On A Dream (Danger Remix)
(TAKEN DOWN, BLAME GOOGLE)

Danger tore shit up when I saw him in Montreal at Les Foufounes Électriques last summer. He's going stateside soon, but unfortunately doesn't seem like he's coming to Boston.

Whatever. See you this Friday.

- Zak Broman

Yet again, another busy week for ROGUEWAVES and On That Tip. You now have literally no excuse not to leave your apartment this weekend to come and see us.

We've been mercilessly putting together what's shaping up to be this Friday's biggest party in the Allston area. About $10 and an RSVP [ it being private and all ] will get you access all night to our private open bar. If you know us you've almost certainly already heard about it. Despite how incredibly awful this Friday (the 13th) was for Allston, there is a lingering hope that Valentine's Day won't blow.

Here's two places you should probably be:

Of course, our good friends at FTW planning a very special Valentine's Circus at Privus Lounge. Undoubtedly this will be packed, and you can expect Fantastadon, John Barera, and our favorite adorable DJ couple Domonique and Jeff Gil to deliver some memorable sets.

Witness the triumphant return of Happy Endings @ Great Scott. There are also free Morrissey CD giveaways to suppress your imminent loneliness.

So, whether you're single or taken by that special someone, at least we can all share our collective misery somewhere.
