I hope you can join us, as the runway presentation is set to be very dramatic in Daniel Hernandez' signature style. Come early, see the show, and have a drink with us afterwards. And check out the ONTHATTIP photo preview below, shot by Christopher Huang at one of our fittings. Yes, I am keeping all the clothes a secret until Thursday, so you only get to see a few girls and some poses!

Before I turn in for the evening (yes, before 11pm...I have a big week coming up!), I want to invite you all to the Privus Lounge 1-Year Anniversary, the launch of Thursday Fashion Night, and a runway show with clothes by Daniel Hernandez, co-styled by myself. Does it get more stylish than that? Oh wait- yes it does. Our own Zak Broman (Roguewaves + ONTHATTIP) and Michael V (the pill) are DJing the press/RSVP reception from 6pm-8:30pm, and on until 10.

I'll be posting some exclusive preview snaps from the fitting in the next couple of days, as shot by Christopher Huang last Sunday.

I'm pleased to say that I will be aiding in the production of a runway show on March 19th, showcasing the designs Daniel Hernandez. His fabulous clothes, which range from minimalist tailored pieces to diaphanous couturesque gowns, transcend the work of other successful Boston designers I've seen. It's nice to find true style in this city.

We are casting girls for the March show, this Sunday, March 1st a 3pm, at DH Studios on Clarendon and Newbury! I'd love to see you there if you fit the bill, or generally defy requirements with your level of fierceness...

I find the pace of fashion seasons to be a bit cumbersome, so it always takes me a while to make my way through the shows as the pictures get released. It just feels like constant inundation, you know? It's hard to feel like anything is new when there's a revolving door of garments spinning past your vision. Anyway...

Here are some of my thoughts from a few Spring 2009 shows, which all happen to be from "A"-named designers; more specifically, ready-to-wear by A.F. Vandevorst and Akris, and couture by Alexis Mabille

A.F. Vandevorst

(Above Left) I adore this not-quite-minimalist but definitely futurist look. So smart. (Above Right) Such an interesting dress, both in drape and texture. I'd wear this for day with grey boots, sunglasses, and an enormous mongolian fur gilet.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) You had me at laser cut leggings with Bowie boots. (Above Right) Over the top? I mean, for SOME people maybe. The garters might be a little Rocky Horror for real world consumption but the satin piece over the tights and contrasting underwear has my full approval.

Akris
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) This notched neckline reminds me of hyper-pixellated Atari 8-bit games, and I love the sheer skirt. Please ignore the shoes. (Above Right) I recommend a trip to style.com to view larger images of this dress. I want to feel this chunky basket-weave material and see it up close; the heavy silhouette it creates is so modernized by its transparency.

Alexis Mabille (Couture)

(Above Left, Right) These two dresses, simple as they may appear, perfectly illustrate what couture craftsmanship can do for a basic shape. I am SO beyond pleased that this black v-neck column (Above Left) was not accessorized with a necklace for the show. The billowy, sparkling one-shoulder (Above Right) has a hint of Studio 54 and yet could be worn to a formal fundraiser as well...versatility that might be particularly appreciated at this price point.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
...Now, if you thought I was going to let this designer off without pointing out some of the other sheer fuckery that flew down the runway during his 54-look couture show (in this global economy!), you're wrong. After the perfectly executed shapes of the black gowns, it pained me to see looks verging on Bebe-designed Nutcracker ballet costumes. I reserve no kind words for cuffed tan capris worn with black pointy-toed pumps (Above Right), ever. And that burnt umber velvet hat (Above Left) takes an already cheeky outfit straight into slapstick territory. Fortunately for male models, getting laid so easily helps take the sting off tangible indignities like this one. JUST SAYING.

See you at Circus tonight!

Happy New Year, fellows and floozies, I hope you all enjoyed the slew of parties and general insanity (and the fashion show!) on Wednesday. On a related note, my ONTHATTIP resolution for 2009 is to start bringing you better and more frequent style content. I'm going to start it off with a new series on the blog, Deconstructed, which will provide step-by-step how-to's on hair, makeup, simple clothing alterations, or anything else that fucking rules, so you can do it yourself.

I took these photos the day before the  New Year's eve runway show, when I was deciding on a makeup concept. I didn't want to forget what my steps were if I liked the end result, so I took these photos, which gave me the idea of deconstructing the process for you. So here it is, my inaugural Deconstructed post, breaking down the New Year's Eve runway makeup (if you missed it, we'll be posting Lara's photos soon)! I used asterisks so I could also tell you the products I used if you want to recreate the look or part of it.

1. Starting with a clean, dry face, rub a drop or two of liquid foundation* into a dime-sized blob of aloe vera gel** until evenly mixed. Starting at the jawline and moving up, apply liberally all over the face, blending as needed. (*L'Oreal truematch super-blendable makeup in Soft Ivory; **Aloe vera gel can be found in any drugstore. Buy as close to 100% pure as possible. It forms a perfect base mixed with foundation that stays put, has a completely natural texture, and also soothes the skin.)
2. Apply concealer* as needed, paying particular attention to redness around the nose and darkness around the eye area. (*bareMinerals powder foundation SPF15 doubles as a concealer and foundation, and for around $25  is arguably the best beauty investment I've ever made)
3. Apply eyeshadow primer* from lid to brow. (*Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion)
4. For the show (but not in the pictures you see here) I lightened the girls' temple-to-cheekbone area dramatically with white shadow*. (*from Maybelline ExpertWear shadow trio in Impeccable Greys)
5. Apply bold golden yellow matte shadow* evenly from lid to brow. (*L'Oreal High Intensity Pigments shadow duo in Flamboyant and Chanel Joues Contraste powder blush in Eldorado)
6. Define brows with dark brown brow pencil*, and spike brows slightly upward with a clear brow gel**. (*Maybelline Define-A-Line in brownish black; **Cover Girl Natural Lash mascara in Clear)
Photobucket
7. Apply shimmery white highlighting powder* to inside corner of eyes, under the inside corner of the brow, and along the underside of the brow from the arch to the outside corner. This will add dimension to both the color and the bone structure. (*NARS Body Shimmer highlighting powder)
8. Apply black eyeliner* in a winged shape from about one quarter of the way from the inner corner of the eye, extending out and slightly up from the outer corner. (*L'Oreal High Intensity Pigments Color Truth Cream Eyeliner in Black, applied with angled brush)
9. Apply multiple coats of black mascara* to the upper and lower lashes. (*L'Oreal Double Extend mascara in Carbon Black)
10. Apply hilighting powder to cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the bow of the lip, and around the temples.
11. Sweep a light-colored bronzer* up underneath the cheekbones to define. Apply a neutral peach blush** to the apples of the cheeks. (*Physician's Formula Magic Mosaic in Watm Beige/Light Bronzer; **Cover Girl TruBlend Naturally Luminous Blush in Shimmering Sands)
12. Warm a bit of liquid foundation between the fingers, and dab it onto the lips, covering completely without over-applying. Powder* to set. (*bareMinerals foundation SPF15)
13. Apply a warm berry lipcolor* to only the center of the top and bottom lip. The color should be smudged outwards slightly, but not all the way to the outer corners of the lip, for a popsicle-stained, doll-like effect. (*Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Suitably Ruby)

Enjoy playing with this look! I hope to see you all at Circus later tonight. I'm feeling pretty low-key following last night's trainwreck, which started with champagne-and-blackberry-brandy cocktails and left me waking up this morning still tipsy and fully dressed on top of my covers. Something's definitely in the air in Boston right now, and I predict some happening shit in 2009....

The Fashist Dictator
I promise you stars that my post infrequency is due to planning the upcoming fashion show, to take place at the FTW FUCK 2008 New Year's Eve Party! I'll be styling wild individualized looks, for some of my favorite faces, with pieces from Rescue and Maya Made It. When you're just starting to get an early buzz, glamazon girls will strut by in impeccable costume with Rogue Waves of ONTHATTIP.INFO on audio. Yes, we love you.

Speaking of our fashion show, I am excited to show off Rescue's quirky, effortless, and affordable style, and equally lucky to have the serially talented Maya adding some of her pieces to the lineup. I went to visit her at her workspace today on a secret spy mission (well, not secret forever, but until I have her blessing. If I showed you, she'd have to kill me). I wanted to  bring my camera, but she was hard at work and I'm not one to interfere.

The fashion show is going to be killer.

New talent Tobey Van O (as sandwiched above), the man behind my newly lightened locks, will be working our models' hair. Curious, unique looks on the runway. Maya, whom the phrase "local designer" does no justice. I really don't want to overload you with F I E R C E until New Year's Eve. Bear with me during the posting freeze, and join FTW, ONTHATTIP.INFO, and a slew of sick DJs, come December 31st. We will bring it and we know you will, too.

Casey, I wanted to post the updated flyer, but since it's not on facebook yet, I'm going to use this magnificent Blob Fish as a place holder. Any readers who would prefer a flyer to the Blob Fish's timeless allure, definitely let Casey Rankin know.
