Before I turn in for the evening (yes, before 11pm...I have a big week coming up!), I want to invite you all to the Privus Lounge 1-Year Anniversary, the launch of Thursday Fashion Night, and a runway show with clothes by Daniel Hernandez, co-styled by myself. Does it get more stylish than that? Oh wait- yes it does. Our own Zak Broman (Roguewaves + ONTHATTIP) and Michael V (the pill) are DJing the press/RSVP reception from 6pm-8:30pm, and on until 10.

I'll be posting some exclusive preview snaps from the fitting in the next couple of days, as shot by Christopher Huang last Sunday.

I'm pleased to say that I will be aiding in the production of a runway show on March 19th, showcasing the designs Daniel Hernandez. His fabulous clothes, which range from minimalist tailored pieces to diaphanous couturesque gowns, transcend the work of other successful Boston designers I've seen. It's nice to find true style in this city.

We are casting girls for the March show, this Sunday, March 1st a 3pm, at DH Studios on Clarendon and Newbury! I'd love to see you there if you fit the bill, or generally defy requirements with your level of fierceness...

Saturday night, I had the privilege of attending the new House of Blues opening party on Lansdowne St., which served as the perfect excuse to both purchase and debut the vintage feathered chapeau shown below. The lovely Saffron, who was with me at Poor Little Rich Girl in Davis Square when I bought it, was also sweet enough to document it for me downstairs at Circus later that evening. Photo by Saffron:

It really played up my newish Yves St. Laurent dress from Rescue, and gave me the pluck- HA, GET IT?- to push through such a stimulating (read: exhausting) evening.

At the opening, I also ran into the innately cool Susie G of Click/Clash, who entertained me with witty banter over the (open) bar and also snapped a pic of my hat.

A few odder highlights? Well, there were the multiple people who told me I have "such beautiful hair!" whilst mistaking my beloved topper for some kind of multi-tonal beehive wig. But perhaps the strangest encounter of the night came when a twentysomething woman cut through the crowd and petted my head, exclaiming "it feels like a kitty cat!" She then proceeded to say, while looking her cringing boyfriend right in the eye, that "kitty cats just like being petted the right way" in a sexy voice, before dramatically striding away. I suffer to think what that poor fellow was subjected to at the end of the night...

Stay tuned in the next couple of days for a big post from me on a salon re-opening, my favorite hairstylist Tobey Van O, and some great skin care products/tips.

I find the pace of fashion seasons to be a bit cumbersome, so it always takes me a while to make my way through the shows as the pictures get released. It just feels like constant inundation, you know? It's hard to feel like anything is new when there's a revolving door of garments spinning past your vision. Anyway...

Here are some of my thoughts from a few Spring 2009 shows, which all happen to be from "A"-named designers; more specifically, ready-to-wear by A.F. Vandevorst and Akris, and couture by Alexis Mabille

A.F. Vandevorst
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) I adore this not-quite-minimalist but definitely futurist look. So smart. (Above Right) Such an interesting dress, both in drape and texture. I'd wear this for day with grey boots, sunglasses, and an enormous mongolian fur gilet.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) You had me at laser cut leggings with Bowie boots. (Above Right) Over the top? I mean, for SOME people maybe. The garters might be a little Rocky Horror for real world consumption but the satin piece over the tights and contrasting underwear has my full approval.

Akris
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) This notched neckline reminds me of hyper-pixellated Atari 8-bit games, and I love the sheer skirt. Please ignore the shoes. (Above Right) I recommend a trip to style.com to view larger images of this dress. I want to feel this chunky basket-weave material and see it up close; the heavy silhouette it creates is so modernized by its transparency.

Alexis Mabille (Couture)
PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left, Right) These two dresses, simple as they may appear, perfectly illustrate what couture craftsmanship can do for a basic shape. I am SO beyond pleased that this black v-neck column (Above Left) was not accessorized with a necklace for the show. The billowy, sparkling one-shoulder (Above Right) has a hint of Studio 54 and yet could be worn to a formal fundraiser as well...versatility that might be particularly appreciated at this price point.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
...Now, if you thought I was going to let this designer off without pointing out some of the other sheer fuckery that flew down the runway during his 54-look couture show (in this global economy!), you're wrong. After the perfectly executed shapes of the black gowns, it pained me to see looks verging on Bebe-designed Nutcracker ballet costumes. I reserve no kind words for cuffed tan capris worn with black pointy-toed pumps (Above Right), ever. And that burnt umber velvet hat (Above Left) takes an already cheeky outfit straight into slapstick territory. Fortunately for male models, getting laid so easily helps take the sting off tangible indignities like this one. JUST SAYING.

See you at Circus tonight!

Hullo darlings...your fair Dictator is currently mainlining Emergen-C and weathering the plague that seems to be going around. Even the cat has resorted to throwing me the side-eye due to my persistent hacking cough. It's ruining MY nap too, bitch! Lola can be so insensitive.

Rough times! So I'm going to give you the opposite of rough right now. I love hedging my bets on new faces, and I'm going to make a prediction that the starry-eyed Isa Asklof, recently signed by Women Management (easily a top three NYC agency), is going to snap up a campaign or two and at least a few editorials in the seasons to come. The native swede is only 17 or 18 years old, and she is lucky to be in Women's capable hands. This agency + this girl = blue chip!

Hello all!

This marks the first of monthly ONTHATTIP.INFO editorials; I will vary the day on which I post The Look each month, so keep your eye out...

In the last year, tales of crooked traders and invasive marketers replaced the pickpockets and peeping toms of yore, leaving us to wonder who, if anyone, we can trust these days. The depraved now appear polished and credible, which inspired my January Look. I hope to see flagrant amorality return to its more-easily-identifiable dark corners in 2009.

Special thanks to Michael V. (of the pill, for you cave-dwellers) for lending his photography skills to my concept, and Marc Spellen, whose natural style and patience are indispensable.

Yours cruelly,
The Fashist Dictator
I can't help but feel decidedly...undecided about fashion right now, and I could smell the recession-fear in the Pre-Fall 2009 Collections. The designers' varied reactions to the times made for an interesting collage of concepts, one which I felt made it difficult for the observer to deduce what exactly now is. Major magazines' vapid celebrity parade and vulgar, out-of-touch "cheap chic" articles have already shown me that the fashion and fashion marketing industry are grasping at straws; when you force-feed people enough homogeny, eventually they will stop knowing what they want, and you in turn will wonder what to give them. I see a lot of confused pandering that I hope corrects itself before the fall presentations.

My plan was a Pre-Fall 2009 overview post, but my opinions on the collections are so varied that I am going to break everything down into a few posts. In spite of my distaste for the "business" of clothes, I love clothes themselves and I will start off with my picks from two of my immediate favorite designers. Geniuses.  I'm also very pleased to see the return of the clean face- I've been ditching my mascara during the day and sticking to Smith's Rosebud Salve on the lips, cheeks and eyelids. It soothes and protects from the currently arctic winds of Allston.

Pre-Fall 2009: Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang's collection for Pre-Fall feels more cerebral than his previous work. These clothes are so simultaneously young and grown-up- see the playful proportions of lingerie fabrics paired with an avuncular jacket and short below left- that it's kind of perverted. I love it. It's hot! Wang's model, Charlotte Hoyer, has a prepubescent Vlada-meets-Toni-Garrn quality and was a great choice for this presentation.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) The perfect layering keeps the individual pieces (mesh bike shorts? a midriff-baring brassiere?) from looking ridiculous. Ensembles like this are proof you can wear anything, if you do it right. (Above Right) The young minimalist done properly, and I love the sleeves at hem-length.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) This shape is effortless daytime sexy, and the neckline is an ideally shaped deep-V. (Above Right) So awkward! Again, the styling reels odd individual elements into exceptional smart-sloppy. Bonus points for showing midriff (in multiple looks!) without a hint of sluttiness.

Pre-Fall 2009: Balenciaga

Nicolas Ghesquiere (Balenciaga designer) never misses. I really do revere him; I wonder sometimes if I would dare to criticize his work, but fortunately he never forces me to make a decision. He is brilliant, always. Learn him, know him, and love him. The first picture (Below Left) is impeccable. The colors, the details, the proportions, the glasses, the shoes- this is runway and street style, and I tip my hat to the house of Balenciaga once again.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) Flawless. (Above Right) I know the controversial drop-crotch trouser begs the "pantload?" question; I find that males particularly abhor this shape, along with the high-waist, pleated mom trousers of winter. I like when "ugly" shapes look smart (Demeulemeester also does a brilliant job with that).

PhotobucketPhotobucket
(Above Left) The proportions of this look are very fresh, and the excessive volume of the fur gloves works. For the street, I'd ditch the glasses and wear an equally joke-oversized dark scarf. (Above Right) I would rarely look twice at a party dress that had this moderately-mini hemline and so much covered on top, but the placing of the delicate lace is stunning, and it carries the tougher boots and gloves.

There are more sharp looks to come, as well as some gross miscalculations of style...stay tuned over the next several days for the Pre-Fall 2009 Collections, Continued......

I know that Rescue garners a lot of attention from me personally on this site...in fact, a tip reader asked me at Circus if I worked there. I don't. I just don't see why their inventory isn't turning over every two weeks because it is BRILLIANT. Instead of the usual Brigid-Rescue-jerk-circle post, I'm just going to put my mouth where my money is, because I went shopping today. It could, and should, be you.

And yes, the sunglasses are Marc...not Marc by Marc. For approximately the price of a parking ticket.

I like to think of weekdays/workdays as shitty commercial breaks in what would otherwise be a fairly excellent show; generally annoying, occasionally amusing, and always in the way of what you really want. Since it's Thursday, and I'm ready to revel in the electro-indie-weekend-scenecest™ that is Allston/Boston right now, I woke up today with a saltier attitude than usual at the prospect of...another weekday. TWO more, actually.

Around 10:30A, my phone rang and a random number popped up, so I picked it up to curse out whatever trifling telemarketer had the nerve to hit me up before noon. Well lo and behold, apparently the random raffle entry I filled out at a StyleFixx event months ago got drawn, and I won almost a grand worth of tooth whitening and medical spa services at BriteSmile on Newbury!

BriteSmile "Medspas" have an excellent reputation in the beauty industry, so that's a solid place to start. But before I get too excited about this "big win", I have to schedule my fancy FREE CONSULTATION and get the lowdown...as someone who works in marketing, I know that "FREE" often means cash not accepted, souls welcome. And who knows, maybe my free raffle money is only valid towards something three times more expensive than its value.

As your resident skeptic and brave beauty/style explorer, I will report back to you with the details of my BriteSmile consultation experience and the place itself (and whether I will actually be redeeming any of my credit there).

I do agree that yellow teeth and looking haggard aren't a 2009 look to shoot for- fuck it, even Winehouse is cleaning up! Stay tuned for my BriteSmile Newbury review.

Happy New Year, fellows and floozies, I hope you all enjoyed the slew of parties and general insanity (and the fashion show!) on Wednesday. On a related note, my ONTHATTIP resolution for 2009 is to start bringing you better and more frequent style content. I'm going to start it off with a new series on the blog, Deconstructed, which will provide step-by-step how-to's on hair, makeup, simple clothing alterations, or anything else that fucking rules, so you can do it yourself.

I took these photos the day before the  New Year's eve runway show, when I was deciding on a makeup concept. I didn't want to forget what my steps were if I liked the end result, so I took these photos, which gave me the idea of deconstructing the process for you. So here it is, my inaugural Deconstructed post, breaking down the New Year's Eve runway makeup (if you missed it, we'll be posting Lara's photos soon)! I used asterisks so I could also tell you the products I used if you want to recreate the look or part of it.

1. Starting with a clean, dry face, rub a drop or two of liquid foundation* into a dime-sized blob of aloe vera gel** until evenly mixed. Starting at the jawline and moving up, apply liberally all over the face, blending as needed. (*L'Oreal truematch super-blendable makeup in Soft Ivory; **Aloe vera gel can be found in any drugstore. Buy as close to 100% pure as possible. It forms a perfect base mixed with foundation that stays put, has a completely natural texture, and also soothes the skin.)
2. Apply concealer* as needed, paying particular attention to redness around the nose and darkness around the eye area. (*bareMinerals powder foundation SPF15 doubles as a concealer and foundation, and for around $25  is arguably the best beauty investment I've ever made)
3. Apply eyeshadow primer* from lid to brow. (*Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion)
4. For the show (but not in the pictures you see here) I lightened the girls' temple-to-cheekbone area dramatically with white shadow*. (*from Maybelline ExpertWear shadow trio in Impeccable Greys)
5. Apply bold golden yellow matte shadow* evenly from lid to brow. (*L'Oreal High Intensity Pigments shadow duo in Flamboyant and Chanel Joues Contraste powder blush in Eldorado)
6. Define brows with dark brown brow pencil*, and spike brows slightly upward with a clear brow gel**. (*Maybelline Define-A-Line in brownish black; **Cover Girl Natural Lash mascara in Clear)
Photobucket
7. Apply shimmery white highlighting powder* to inside corner of eyes, under the inside corner of the brow, and along the underside of the brow from the arch to the outside corner. This will add dimension to both the color and the bone structure. (*NARS Body Shimmer highlighting powder)
8. Apply black eyeliner* in a winged shape from about one quarter of the way from the inner corner of the eye, extending out and slightly up from the outer corner. (*L'Oreal High Intensity Pigments Color Truth Cream Eyeliner in Black, applied with angled brush)
9. Apply multiple coats of black mascara* to the upper and lower lashes. (*L'Oreal Double Extend mascara in Carbon Black)
10. Apply hilighting powder to cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the bow of the lip, and around the temples.
11. Sweep a light-colored bronzer* up underneath the cheekbones to define. Apply a neutral peach blush** to the apples of the cheeks. (*Physician's Formula Magic Mosaic in Watm Beige/Light Bronzer; **Cover Girl TruBlend Naturally Luminous Blush in Shimmering Sands)
12. Warm a bit of liquid foundation between the fingers, and dab it onto the lips, covering completely without over-applying. Powder* to set. (*bareMinerals foundation SPF15)
13. Apply a warm berry lipcolor* to only the center of the top and bottom lip. The color should be smudged outwards slightly, but not all the way to the outer corners of the lip, for a popsicle-stained, doll-like effect. (*Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Suitably Ruby)

Enjoy playing with this look! I hope to see you all at Circus later tonight. I'm feeling pretty low-key following last night's trainwreck, which started with champagne-and-blackberry-brandy cocktails and left me waking up this morning still tipsy and fully dressed on top of my covers. Something's definitely in the air in Boston right now, and I predict some happening shit in 2009....
